Previous Next 7 November 2019 – On this day, 5 students from National University of Singapore (NUS) visited newspaper factory and had a batik class. The first destination was newspaper factory. They visited local news, ‘Kedaulatan Rakyat’ newspaper factory. It is located in Jalan Solo-Yogyakarta, near Adisucipto airport. They were welcomed by mbak Suci, the head of public relation of Kedaulatan Rakyat (KR) newspaper. Mbak Suci asked them about their experience in Jogja and their opinion about Indonesia. After that the session was continued with question and answer session about the newspaper, government role, and history of KR newspaper. After finished QnA session, mbak Suci showed them the factory, including the machines that were used to produce the newspaper daily, the length of paper rolls, and the ink color that is used to produce color in the newspaper. Unfortunately, they could not see the process on making the news paper because the production process is usually held at 2 AM. Then they finished their session there by giving souvenir to mbak Suci. The trip continued to another place. They went to Lukman Batik Kauman to learn how to make batik. It was near the popular mosque in Yogyakarta called Kauman Mosque. There, mbak Tyas guided them step by step to make their own batik. Before they started to make the batik, they ate a whole chicken with rice and vegetables but without any spoon or fork. They ate the chicken in Javanese style. They thought that it was interesting since they eat with hand and the plate was a banana leaf. Mbak Tyas told them briefly about the history and development of batik in Indonesia. Then, they started to paint the fabric. They drew the motive first with a pencil. After that, they put it on a frame and started nyanting or drawing the motive with malam or wax. It needs full concentration to paint the sketch of the drawing. After they finished nyanting, they colored the drawn fabric. They had to dry the colored fabric before they continued ngunci or locking the color in the fabric with specific chemical. After they locked it, they dried the fabric and nglorot or washed the wax out from the fabric. Then they dried for the last time. They felt that the steps were not easy. They now understand why batik tulis is very expensive. It is because the process took a long time just to make batik tulis. They took some photos and finished the batik session at 3 PM.
